The difference in units between FAC (Free Available Chlorine) and CL (Chlorine) reflects the different nature of their measurement and representation. Although they both relate to chloride concentrations, they are expressed in different units because of their different uses and environments.
The unit for FAC (Free Active Chlorine) is PPM (Parts Per Million): PPM is a unit of concentration that expresses the amount of a particular substance contained per million units of mass. In water quality testing, the concentration of free active chlorine is usually expressed in PPM, which means how many molecules of free active chlorine are present in one million molecules of water. This expression is suitable for describing relatively low concentrations, such as the concentration of chlorine added during disinfection, which is usually at a low level.
CL (chlorine) is expressed in mg/L (milligrams per litre): mg/L is a unit of mass concentration that expresses the mass of a particular substance contained in each litre of solution. In water quality analysis and water treatment, mg/L is commonly used to express the concentration of chlorine. This expression is suitable for describing higher concentrations, such as the concentration of chlorine already present in a body of water.
PPM applies to relatively low concentrations, while mg/l applies to higher concentrations.
